Blogging: The Movie

Yes, that's right. Robin Good and Marco Montemagno are "shooting" a movie about bloggers, with bloggers and for bloggers, to evangelize blogging. The stars are, who else, but real-life bloggers. And everyone can be one ...

Even more original, the movie is going to be open-source, meaning that everyone ("Complete source footage will be distributed to all supporting bloggers (and not) for unlimited remixing.") will be able to add to it, remix it and freely share it with the world.

Can you imagine the viral power of this? Believe it or not, but this small grassroots project has huge potential to become bigger than the Blair Witch.

The wave could start with as little as few bloggers who create their own remixed version and:

a] share it with their friends, who are bound to share it further;
b] share it at their blog, reaching new people to share it forward.

Those originally featured in the movie will, naturally do the same. Not before long, and a huge part of the blogosphere will be blogging about the pic. The movie will probably already reach cult status even before its released to the public or seen by anyone.

The power of viral marketing and online conversations at its best. And that even before the mainstream press catches on ... and when they do, there's no telling where the project might go. TV coverage, talk shows, radio ...

Although the movie probably won't see the theatres, I wouldn't exclude the possibility of it reaching more people than some Hollywood blockbusters.

In Seth Godin's terms, this project has a free prize inside, is a purple cow and definitevely unleashes the ideavirus.

With all the publicity the movie will be generating, the next logical step for Robin and Marco probably should be to turn the movie website in to a one-stop-shop resource site for blogging, to intercept the new wave of people interested in blogging as the consequence of the movie. I'm thinking e-zines, blog directories, blogging tools, polls, discussion lists, forums, NewsMaster feeds, reports etc.

Now, the project will be funded by bloggers (which is already starting to raise some eyebrows), but I'm sure it will attract some larger sponsors as well. Blogging companies at least.

Well, Robin and Marco say they don't want to make any money from this. Guys, make money off this! It's a perfect idea, and you deserve to make something from it. I certainly wouldn't mind if they made a few bucks for all their hard work. Would you?

[Update]
I just spoke with Robin a few minutes ago (no, I didn't record the conversation this time:) and I asked him why they're not aiming to make any money off TheWeblogProject. Robin's sincere response was the best answer possible: because this is not "their" project, but the project of the entire blogosphere. Enough said. Good luck!

What a fantastic idea. I don't even have a blog of my own yet -- I'm still learning how from Rok's amazing ebook which I'm up to Section III in my study.

I would love to stay on top of this project. I'm an internet marketer and I would LOVE to see RSS become the best way for people to send and receive information.

Peace,
