How Big is the RSS Opportunity? Join in ...

We've been discussing how big the RSS opportunity is quite frequently within RSS development & marketing circles for the past few months.

But we never seem to get to the "final" answer, supported by most of the industry. We all know that ...

  • RSS is the most reliable content delivery channel;
  • it increases search engine rankings;
  • it enhances e-mail marketing and builds on that relationship;
  • it generates media coverage through content syndication;
  • it develops online conversations;
  • and so on ...

But the key questions still remain ...

a] Given the spending that people are making in internet marketing, what percentage will RSS based initiatives have within 3 years?

b] What is the potential RSS marketsize?

c] How will RSS establish itself in the marketing world?

Your comments, feedback and insights are most welcome. Either post them below or send us a trackback with your own post on this ...

And please share the word, we'd like to get as much feedback as possible.

I suspect that human factors are more important than the technology. Having people who want to be in charge of what they read and how often is basic to RSS: currently, this is NOT the basis for how most/much people get their information. Unless this changes, while RSS may be used by large numbers of people, they will not be significant for most marketing efforts.

From a content delivery stand point, it will be all about RSS. It's as easy to use as email and only getting easier; resulting in large consumer appeal. Why go to 50 sites per day looking for updates when they can come right to you? Publishers will have to monetize the channel when impressions follow. We are in the early days of RSS. Wait for RSS v2.0 (not the standard but the experience).

RSS for me puts me in control - I get what I want when I subscribe and privacy taboot and if I wish to unsubscribe, click and no more unwanted infomation. Putting the power back in the consumers hands, I like that as a consumer.
