Only 2 Percent Use RSS?

Latest Forrerster Research study claims that only 2 percent of all online households in America are using RSS.

"One point that's sure to catch attention is the number of people using RSS -- our Technographics survey of 68,000 North American households showed that only 2% of all online households were "using RSS". Now here's the caveat -- that doesn't include all the people who may be using RSS (for example, through My Yahoo!) and don't realize it. Young consumers between the ages of 12-21 were more likely to be using RSS -- 5% of online young consumers say they use RSS."

This data, although based on a survey of 68,000 households, is highly contradictory to other available research of RSS usage, especially the 12% figure from Jupiter Research and the PEW research, which shows that 9% of Americans online have a good idea of what RSS is.

Who can we trust?

This might be a good time to get some subscriber counts from companies like Feedburner, Pheedo, Nooked, Syndicate IQ, Simple Feed and others.

In what way is it contradictory with PEW's research?
PEW found that 5% of people use RSS, and that included MyYahoo-type aggregation. Given other data that shows that MyYahoo-types hold something like 60% of the aggregation market, including desktop, this puts the overall RSS number from Forrester at about 5% or 6%, does it not?

Jupiter is grossly overestimating new techs, that's their job.

Since I've been pushing the use of RSS on a daily face to
face basis and the response has never been more than a "I'll
have a look at it", I think that the 2% estimate might be a
bit on the overoptimistic side.

Vincent,

I'm not sure I can agree.

1. Yes, My.Yahoo is an exception, however it's difficult to believe that those using bloglines (presumably what you refer to as MyYahoo-type aggregation) do not know they are subscribing to RSS feeds.

2. Latest PEW data shows that 9% of Americans online have a good idea of what RSS is. If that's true, wouldn't the Forrester survey reflect that more?
