I'm not sure where these guys are getting their RSS insights from, but they couldn't be further from the mark. 1] RSS allows for individual "per-subscriber" RSS feeds, which in their case could be generated, tracked and secured based on their existing database, for each of their subscribers. 2] RSS allows for HTTP authentication, which means that access to the feed can be moderated with a username/password combination. And then there are some more advanced options available as well. The bottom-line is that the company in question could do all of this with RSS, instead of forcing its users to install yet another piece of software they'll probably be able to use only for this one subscription. And oh, MyST Technology Partners offer per-user based RSS feed authentication out-of-the-box. Comments
Rok, thanks for addressing this common misconception--and thanks for the MyST reference! :) One other thing to note is that it is possible not only to control access to RSS feeds on a user-by-user basis, but also to control access to specific items within a feed on a user-by-user basis. Thus, two users subscribed to the exact same feed might actually see different RSS items, based on their authentication credentials. For more discussion, see also this article in Information Age: 1.
