My stance is that while Atom 1.0 does offer more flexibility and enables for better content tagging, it doesn't have enough penetration and support to challenge RSS, especially with Microsoft starting to support RSS.
And people really aren't ready for another format. They're still getting acquainted with RSS, so another format to think about at this point is a definite no.
Unless of course Atom goes beyond being Atom and simply becoming a content subscription service ... the path RSS is already on.
